Fruits of Apartheid:
Experiencing Independence in a Transkeian Village

Julia Segar

South African anthropologist Julia Segar describes daily life in one of the "independent homelands" created by the apartheid regime. Segar tells the story of the transition to "independence" from the point of view of villagers, critically analyzing the concept of "independence."

Julia Segar studied social anthropology at the University of Cape Town and is a lecturer in the Anthropology Dept. of Rhodes University. In addition to rural research in Transkei, she has worked as part of a research team investigating conditions of life in Cape Town's migrant labour hostels. Her present interest is in the rapidly growing field of medical anthropology in South Africa.
