Social Responsibility and the Place of
the Artist in Society
By Carol Becker
Reflections on the art wars by feminist critic
Carol Becker, Dean at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago,
where student art twice set off national controversy over
censorship. Becker discusses the reluctance of the art community
to confront the content of censored work and the emotions
the work generates, and tries to explain why the art world
hasn't developed a stronger methodology and discourse
for addressing issues of social responsibility and accountability.
Carol Becker, Academic Vice President and Dean
at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, is the author
of Surpassing the Spectacle: Global Transformations and
the Changing Politics of Art; The Invisible Drama: Women and
the Anxiety of Change; Zones of Contention: Essays on Art,
Institutions, Gender and Anxiety; (editor) The Subversive
Imagination: Artists, Society and Social Responsibility;
and The Artist in Society. She organized an international
conference on Art and Society at the Art Institute of Chicago
in 1994.
